[WR #01] 2 Powerful Questions to Ask to Simplify Your Purpose-Driven Business Model for Scaling

About a year after my divorce was final, I decided it was time to try dating again.

My last swim in the dating pool was pre “swipe left / right” so I felt a little out of my element trying to navigate the terrain.

I had Google help me with a bit of research, picked a couple of apps to try, and dove into the deep end headfirst.

I was pretty overwhelmed at first, but a month or two - and dozens of “interesting” dates - later, I was starting to discern what was working and what wasn’t.

Having certain pictures in my profile would yield more connection requests - others didn’t.

Some apps attracted the kinds of guys I was into - others were total duds.

Some responses I’d send would end up with a date that was fun and exciting - others would lead to IM purgatory (or the occasional unsolicited offensive photo 😳).

Over time, I was able to see very clearly which activities were worth my energy and which weren’t so I could double down on what was working, and leave the rest behind.

I became an app dating machine :)

So what do my lessons from dating in the age of the app have to do with scaling a purpose-driven business?

A lot, actually.

As founders, we tend to pick up business growth activities based on what we see happening around us.

Maybe it’s an industry standard (“everybody’s doing this thing so we should probably do it too…”)

Sometimes we get advice from a guru, expert, or mentor telling us to “do what I did and you’ll be successful too!”

Other times we just throw spaghetti at the wall and feel super grateful when it sticks.

I see this all the time with my clients…

Founders and their teams end up wasting a TON of energy on activities that 1) don't necessarily get the results they want, and/or 2) kind of suck to implement, and then they have no capacity left to use to scale.

But when we limit our focus to the activities that are BOTH most effective at creating results AND align with our values, the whole game changes.

We bring ease, simplicity, and the potential for even better results into the equation.

I started to get traction with the dating apps when I did two things:

1) Paid attention to what was working, and

2) ONLY did more of it if it actually FELT GOOD TO DO IT

When I start working with a purpose-driven brand to help them simplify and scale, this is exactly where we start - and where you can too!

If you’re sensing that your company has tons of potential to scale and grow but you’re worried you’ll have to sacrifice something important in order to do it, TRY THIS NOW:

Do a quick assessment of your company’s marketing, sales, and operational activities and ask yourself:

1) what kind of results are we getting out of our investment of time and energy in this activity?

and 2) does it FEEL GOOD to do it this way?

If you're NOT getting results in an activity (even if you love it), consider letting it go or seeking outside help to optimize it so it DOES get results.

If an activity IS getting results but something about the execution feels off, try trading it in for something that checks all the boxes.

If it's the holy grail of activities and it BOTH gets great results AND brings joy to execute - hallelujah! Dial that stuff in and double down on it.

YOUR TURN: What's one activity you know RIGHT NOW that you can double down on? And how will your results change when you do?
